Welcome to the Andrew Tiernan Connection.

Biography

Andrew James Tiernan was born under the star sign of Sagittarius on the 30th November 1965 in Birmingham, UK. He is the eldest of the three children in his family having both a younger brother and sister.

He attended the George Dixon School in Birmingham as a teenager and it was as a student there that he received encouragement from his drama teacher Mrs. Morrison to pursue acting after his successful portrayal of the Artful Dodger in a school production of “Oliver!”. He then spent three years performing with the Birmingham Youth Theatre.

Later at the age of fifteen – and an avid fan of punk music – he was lucky enough to actually meet one of his personal idols John Lydon who encouraged him to move to London.

Following the advice of these two mentors he moved to London in 1983 to study at the Drama Centre. Whilst completing his three-year Bachelor of Arts degree in Acting he performed in several of their productions including Calderon’s “Life Is A Dream” and Marlowe’s “Edward II”. He was later to star as Piers Gaveston in Derek Jarman’s film version of the Marlowe play in 1991.

After graduation his first professional role in a play was as Azor in “The Dispute” by Marivaux at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield.

Andy’s acting career has now spanned over fifteen years and he has become a well-known figure amongst fans of high-quality British television drama. In 1998 in one such outstanding series “Hornblower” he played the ill-fated but memorable role of Bunting in the second episode “The Examination For Lieutenant”.

His stage work also continues to flourish with leading roles in the 2003 productions of “Flesh Wound” at the Royal Court Theatre and “True West” at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre.

2003 also saw the release of two major film projects for Andy: the first being his role as “Szalas” in Roman Polanski’s “The Pianist” and the second one as “Dean” in Antonia Bird’s production “Rehab” a work that was partly devised by the cast itself and therefore a role that he felt he could really get his teeth into.

2004 was also a busy year for him with appearances in the television dramas "Red Cap", "Waking The Dead" and "Murder Investigation Team".

And in 2005 he appeared in the television productions of: "Whose Baby?", "Life On Mars", "The Rotter's Club", "Murphy's Law", "The Quatermass Experiment", "Spooks" and, most recently, "Waste of Shame".

At present he has just completed an important film shoot in Canada - the Frank Miller story "300", directed by Zack Snyder. Andy plays the pivotal role of Ephialtes in this big budget Warner Bros. production.
