Storyline

*A film dramatisation of C.S. Forester's classic maritime adventurer.

The Indefatigable puts into Gibraltar where three survivors from a wrecked brig are rescued, one of whom is the legendary Captain Foster who Hornblower comes to admire.

Supplies are much reduced so Hornblower leads a mission to Algiers to replenish them. The crew finds itself quarantined when exposed to plague but Hornblower utilises the time to study for his pending Leiutenant's Examination.

Back in Gibraltar, Hornblower sits his exam but fails to impress his Commanding Officers until an alarm is raised when a Spanish attack looms...*

(*-* Review taken from DVD cover.)

Andrew Tiernan plays Bunting, a press-ganged sailor who's resentment towards the officers builds when the crew's already meagre rations become decreased even further. In "a moment of madness" he steals food from the hold of the ship and is punished by being made to "run the gauntlet" - a ritualized method of flogging used in the Royal Navy at the time. As a result of this severe punishment his rebelliousness grows and Horatio Hornblower does his best to subdue this behaviour for Bunting's own good. Finally however the troubled sailor takes his fate into his own hands, grimly reasoning that it is better to die by: "...the speed of the bullet than the slow agony of the rope". Afterwards Hornblower feels downcast for not being able to save the life of a man under his command.
